Sun damage happens every single day, rain or shine, winter, spring, summer or fall. We get more exposure to harmful rays than we realize. If you commute, sit by a window throughout the day, walk outside, do yard work or dine outside you are exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Sun damage is cumulative, meaning incremental exposure increases the risks to your skin. Even those with a dark complexion require a sunscreen. So, what exactly is SPF? SPF stands for sun protection factor and is a measurement of how efficiently a sunscreen protects you from ultraviolet rays. A broad- spectrum sunscreen means it protects against UVA and UVB rays. The American Academy of Dermatology said that a SPF 30 provides adequate coverage. SPF 30 provides a 97% protection while SPF 45 gives 98% protection. Anything higher gives only negligible more coverage.
“Ultraviolet light is electromagnetic radiation found in sunlight. There are two types of ultraviolet light which reach the earth’s surface, UVA and UVB rays. Ninety-five percent of the radiation that reaches earth are UVA rays. They penetrate deep into the epidermis and are the major culprit behind premature aging. These rays are present every day, no matter the weather. They are so strong, they can even penetrate the ozone layer, clouds and glass!" Omorovicza.
Many would argue that our need for vitamin D out-weighs the risks of sun exposure. Vitamin D is most effective when absorbed through the skin from the sun. However, only ten minutes a day is sufficient. After ten minutes, you can head for the shade or get that sunscreen on. It is also important to note that UV rays can pass through clothing.
So why should we protect our skin from the sun? It shields us from ultraviolet rays, prevents premature aging and lowers skin cancer risk. The CDC says that UV rays cause 60-90 percent of melanomas which are the most dangerous type of skin cancer.
Sunscreen lowers blotchiness and red veins and acne that appear on the face, prevents painful sunburns, and enhances the health of the skin. The collagen and elastin in our skin is also protected by sunscreen. SPF protection can be found in skin care products that enhance our skin and provides more protection than clothes offer.
